Detailed Windows Services List

Yesterday, user Hat Monster did a great writeup of the default Windows (2k/XP) services and what they mean over on the MS message board at arstechnica. I’ve been meaning to post one of these for reference purposes, but I liked this one so much that I figured I would save myself some work and reprint his comments here:

“I’m fed up with misguided, malicious and downright moronic websites springing up everywhere telling people to disable or enable or wave a dead chicken at certain services without telling people what they’re actually doing or just plain lying about it.

So I’m going to tear up the weeds and plant some greenery there. Hopefully without being wrong myself, but we’ll see.

Wireless Fails with T30 FCP Upgrade

An upgrade of Windows 2000’s default install on an (courtesy of IBM) on an FCP Thinkpad T30 to Windows XP can yield wireless unusable. With firmware updated and the latest drivers downloaded and installed, IBM’s technical support was still unable to help me get wireless to a working state. Pressed for time, here’s the hack job in case you should ever find yourself in the position.

Large SSH Transfers Quit Randomly

On more than one occassion the graphical SSH client for Windows has simply stalled on me. Its particularly frustrating when, in a case like last night’s, I leave a large number of files to transfer only to find come morning that the transfer halted midway through.

Fortunately I have not had this problem with the command line client for Windows at all, be it the version included in the commercial GUI distribution or OpenSSH bundled with Cygwin for Windows. For the commercial version, the commands are ssh2 and scp2 respectively, and take all of the options and switches you’d expect from OpenSSH and on other platforms.

dos2unix on Solaris

In order to remove the ^M control characters from a text file on Solaris, you may need to give the name of an output file to the dos2unix command. I have had inconsistent results with some but not all ^M characters being removed some of the time. It seems its even enough to state the input file twice, effectively overwriting it during the conversion. In my experience, only this method has worked consistently.

ex: dos2unix input.file input.file

An Updated WinXP CD

XPCREATE is a utility program that will combine an original XP distribution and assorted hotfixes and updates to produce an up-to-date XP Distibution CD. XPCREATE allows the user to define custon installations and setup programs, but it’s main richness lies in the slipstreaming of most available updates and hotfixes, thus insuring the integrity of both the initial installation, and the physical CD media. Slipstreaming the latest hotfixes and updates is important in avoiding possible vulnurability attacks during the setup phase, and in avoiding the need to re-apply hotfixes after a windows component is added or removed.”
