OIT Browser Recommendation

According to this Help Desk posting, it seems that at least for the time being OIT recommends Firefox or Safari for those wishing to access Webmail.

Hostmaster Registration Time

It took me this long to realize that all my hostmaster registrations are accepted at 15 and 45 minutes every hour. Wow, I’m slow.

SPSS Conversion

SPSS stores data in a propriatary format (.sav extension). I needed to pull the data out and save it in something more usable (.xls). At first I tried using SPSS to do the file
conversion. Unfortuneatly SPSS kept core dumping on me. Rather than fix the problem
I looked else where for help. Enter DBMSCopy. With DBMSCopy I was able to convert the SPSS file to a comma delimited file. I don’t recommend this because the output seems to be quite messy for complex data sets. I converted to Excel format easily using DBMSCopy conversion tool.

SP2 Upgrade Bluescreens

I’ve had my first SP2 upgrade failure. This one is a home machine and fits the description of the problem in Microsoft’s support db. The user reported it as a missing “winsrv” file reported by a bluescreen. They’re now unable to get into the machine at all much to their frustration as they wanted to attempt replacing the missing file. Its a machine that’s at their home at the moment, so its a little difficult for me to assess. I’m having them look for the spuninst.txt file via the Recovery Console just to make sure the SP2 upgrade recently came through. Unfortunately the potential remedy is probably beyond a standard user’s ability.

Symantec Antivirus 9 Blue-screens W2K

I ran into the problem with Symantec Antivirus 9 causing Windows 2000 to blue screen, so I’ve posted the OIT-sanctioned fix here.

Since this past weekend, we have learned of a small number of Windows 2000 machines (both DeSC and Non-DeSC) that may have blue-screened following the
install of the Oct 12 MS Security Hotfix MS04-032(840987). The problem appears to be related to the hotfix itself, Windows 2000, SAV 9 client, and a SAV 9 client setting. To resolve these blue screens, departmental SCAD/DCS can do the following or for other departments, please forward a ticket to SWS.

- Boot-up in “Safe Mode” (F8)
- Open “Symantec Antivirus”
- Click on the “Configure” menu
- Select “File System Auto-Protect”
- Click the “Advanced” button
- From the “Startup options”, choose “Symantec Antivirus Start”
- Go to “Control Panel” and “Add/Remove Programs”
- Uninstall “Windows 2000 Hotfix - KB 840987″
- Reboot the computer
- Open “Internet Explore”, click on the “Tools” menu, and select
“Window Update”
- If prompted, click “Yes”
- Run a scan and install KB 840987
- Reboot
