Pine via SSH

If you’re going to launch pine directly from SSH you need to add -t. The manpage explains why:

-t Force pseudo-tty allocation. This can be used to execute
arbitary screen-based programs on a remote machine, which can
be very useful e.g. when implementing menu services.

XP Hibernate

I just realized that Windows XP Hibernate will allow you to boot from another device while your current OS is in hibernation.  This makes sense but I’m not quite sure this ability has an actual use.  Perhaps it would come in handy if you were running a dual boot setup and wanted to switch to the Linux or other OS side without closing all programs and going through an entire reboot. To explore the potential put a bootable disk in one of your removeable media drives.  Put Windows XP into hibernation and then turn the computer back on.  You will boot to the OS on the device.  Remove the disk and reset the power and you’re back to your saved Windows XP session.

Auto-generated edu.mit.Kerberos

Mac OS X Tiger auto-generates its edu.mit.Kerberos file when you use the Active Directory plugin in Directory Access. Here’s what it considers the lay of the land Kerberos-wise from what it can cull from Active Directory.

OSS in Financial Engineering

Here’s a neat little open source application project I stumbled upon today that’s neat from the ‘Financial Engineering’ half of my department:

“A web-based prediction market (Idea Futures) system. In prediction markets, the commodities traded are claims about future events; the market price gives a consensus probability about the event’s likelihood of coming true.”

Personal Folders Backup

I sure do hate .PSTs, but if you have any data stored in them you might as well build in some redundancy:

Backing up your Microsoft Outlook information is quicker and easier with the Personal Folders Backup feature. Personal Folders Backup creates backup copies of your .PST files at regular intervals, in Outlook 2000 and later versions, making it easy to keep all of your Outlook folders safely backed up.

With Personal Folders Backup, you can choose which of your .PST files you wish to back up, and how often you wish to back them up.
